Eric J. Smith's Portfolio - Processes
Evidence/Projects
Context
My school district was in the process of purchasing a data-management program called DataDirector. The purpose of the program was to give teachers the ability to conduct data collection from formative assessments. The assessment data could then be analyzed and shared with other teachers in the district. I was extremely interested in creating an instructional design package to introduce the program of DataDirector to the teaching staff. I gained access to DataDirector and became a Subject Matter Expert. I used this knowledge to create an instructional design package which included:
- Logging in for the first time
- Navigate DataDirector
- Creating exams using DataDirector's existing test bank
- Uploading data to DataDirector
Outcomes
The overall development of the instructional design package is the main process which demonstrates this standard. I used audience analysis to determine the ability level of the teachers in the district with the use of computers and programs with web based interfaces. Through the use of task analysis I developed a content map to describe the processes needed to be proficient with DataDirector. Finally I created a set of objectives to build the instructional design package around.
Problem
My biggest challenge was teaching myself how to use the DataDirector program. I did not have an instruction manual provided by the maker of the program. However I did have some very poorly written job aids created by the program publisher to assist in some tasks. The lack of refined instruction sheets or job aids made it a challenge to create the objectives from the task analysis and content map.
Results
From this project I was able to create an instructional design package that works for teachers with little or no experience with DataDirector. The instructional package was created from the perspective of a person who will be using it firsthand. It is broken into three different modules:
- Introduction and Navigation of DataDirector
- Creating Exams in DataDirector from Test Bank
- Uploading Data from Exam to DataDirector
Growth
I have grown from this experience and now know that I can take a program I know nothing about and create an instructional design package which could be used by anyone. I have the confidence to say to a client, "I can create an instructional package, just give me the resources you have available." I know I can make it happen because of my knowledge of the instructional design process.
